PAC Warns About the Dangers of DIY Plumbing

With the advent of the Internet especially video streaming sites, more and more home owners are being confident to troubleshoot their home repair concerns to save on service costs. The Plumbers’ Association of California (PAC) warns though that self-troubleshooting issues involving electricity and plumbing can do more harm than good. “Yes, it may work, but for sure it would not be a permanent solution. Most of the time though, do-it-yourself solutions do not work the first time and becomes a more expensive repair job that has to be resolved by a professional,” explains Benjamin Foster, Executive Director of the PAC.

The website Popular Mechanics for instance echoes the possible hazards of DIY plumbing repair in one of its blogposts on DIY Plumbing. In the write-up it mentioned that repairs carried out by the homeowner himself could just end up more catastrophic than the original problem the homeowner was trying to resolve.

“There are some DIY projects that are the most fun and rewarding if you simply dive in and learn as you go. And then there's plumbing. Learning to fix your leaks or replace your toilet can save you money, but DIY plumbing can turn to disaster quickly if you're not careful. While some problems can be avoided, many nightmares are inevitable, especially if you have old or poorly installed plumbing.”

Media Company ABC News also shared an article cautioning homeowners against doing DIY work. According to the write-up apart from not being able to fix the problem, the homeowner who decides to self-troubleshoot a plumbing or electrical issue at home is also risking his personal safety. “In a recent Time magazine poll, 36 percent of people said they are spending less on home improvements, but 23 percent said they are doing more home repairs themselves rather than hiring help. The argument for going with the pros isn't just about saving money in the long run. It's also about saving yourself. Emergency room doctors say they have treated more do-it-yourself injuries in the past year as people cut corners to save money.”

The PAC says, licensed expert plumbing is worth every dollar that a homeowner pays for. “A licensed plumber gets it right the first time, works faster, has the right tools, works safely, and ensures that the damage will be fully resolved and will not endanger the safety of any member of the household,” Foster adds.
